It is no exaggeration
to affirm that a journey
by bicycle is like none
other; it is a thing
apart; it has a tempo
and a style of its own.
- James E. Starrs,
The Noiseless Tenor

You already know how much you love traveling by bicycle. Have you thought about sharing that enthusiasm with your son or daughter, or even a favorite niece, nephew, or grandchild?

If you have entertained the idea in the past, this trip could be the perfect opportunity to act on it. You and your young companion(s) will ride on car-free, paved pathways amidst the sublime alpine scenery of Colorado’s Summit and Eagle counties. After your load-free days on the road—gear will be hauled by our van—you’ll enjoy delicious, family-oriented catered meals before chatting around the campfire and crawling into your tent, where you’ll be accompanied by the heady scent of pine and rarified mountain air.

This is the heart of Colorado’s ski country, but by no means does the fun end after the snow has melted.

The trip is designed to accommodate riders ranging from neophyte to experienced. In past years we’ve hosted children as young as eight years old, riding on tandems with Mom or Dad, as well as “kids” as old as eighteen, who typically leave their parents in the dust (or back at the bistro, enjoying a steaming latte). Mileages and climbing are moderate, with the exception of the big ascent of Vail Pass. Our experienced staff will be on hand if a shuttle or other support is needed; most families in the past, however, have successfully summitted the big hill, adding to the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that so many mention sharing on this adventure.

Highlights include the easy spin around sprawling Lake Dillon; the Blue River Pathway, a snaking path of asphalt that links Frisco with the Victorian mining town-turned-ski resort of Breckenridge; and the Tenmile Canyon Trail at the Copper Mountain resort. This pathway links up with Vail Pass National Recreation Trail, which will take you over Vail Pass while serving up an ever-changing panorama of the surrounding Gore Range. During time spent off the bikes in these resort towns, you’ll find plenty of shopportunities for the older folks and countless activities for the kids.

Arguably, though, the best is yet to come, as you enjoy the mellow descent alongside the imposing rock walls of the Colorado River canyon. Your final destination is Glenwood Springs, where the Yampa Spring feeds naturally heated water (but cooled from the 122 degrees at which it bubbles from the ground) into the historic and huge Hot Springs Pool.

What a fun and relaxing way to cap a week of cycling and renewed, or newfound, camaraderie with the kid in your life. With any luck, you’ll be talking like one of the dads on a previous tour, who raved that after the trip his two sons had become “cycling buddies for life.”

For more detailed information, see Event logistics. Minimum age for participation in the Family Fun tours is eight years old.
