Frequently Asked Questions

Where do my membership fees go?

Adventure Cycling uses your membership fees for programs that allow us to do route research, produce maps, advocate for safer cycling conditions nationwide, publish our member magazine, lead tours and educational courses, and spread the word about the value of bicycle travel. In general, we work hard to inspire people to get out and ride their bikes.

What part of my membership is tax-deductible?

Adventure Cycling Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Adventure Cycling is a registered charity with Tax ID 23-7427629. Your membership is fully tax-deductible. No goods or services were provided in exchange for this contribution.

Where can I find additional information on the association’s nonprofit status?

Adventure Cycling Association is a 501(c)3 nonprofit membership association. You can find more information about our nonprofit and financial status on Guidestar.org. Guidestar is an independent national database of nonprofit organizations. Our IRS form 990s for the last several years are also available on our website.

How can I join or renew?

You can join or renew online or via phone with a credit card, or through regular mail by sending a check or money order. Our office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mountain Time, Monday through Friday. We also have the option to choose a monthly installment plan autorenew so that you won’t have to worry about these notices.

When renewing, will my expiration date extend out from my current one, or reset based on the purchase date?

Your membership expiration date will extend out one year from its current date when you purchase a membership at the same or lower tier. If you renew your membership a year or more before it was set to expire, your payment will be applied as a donation. If you upgrade your membership (i.e. changing from Digital Hub to Classic Adventure Cyclist), your membership expiration date extends one year from the purchase date.

Where is my membership number listed?

Your membership number either consists of a letter and 6 numbers (Z123456 or L123456) or an 8-digit number starting with “17”. It can be viewed here on our website when logged in. In most cases you will not need to provide your member number to interact with any of our systems, including the renewal process, as our system is good at matching you based on your name and contact info.

I received a renewal notice, even though I just contributed money to the organization.

Sorry for the confusion! When you contribute via our donate pages, or send a check in without a note indicating it’s for membership, it is typically entered as a donation rather than a membership payment. We can always remedy this, of course, so if you feel that you are receiving a renewal notice in error, please contact us at memberships@adventurecycling.org and we will get the situation fixed.

Can I just purchase the magazine rather than being a member?

No, we do not sell our magazine as a separate product or assign a retail value to it. It is only available to members as an incidental benefit for their support of the organization. If you would like to request a sample issue, you may do so here, and we’ll send you a digital copy to check out.

What if my Adventure Cyclist magazine arrives damaged or doesn’t arrive at all?

Please contact us and we will send you a new copy.

How can I make sure I continue to receive my magazine when I move?

Because our magazine is not forwarded by the post office, we need to hear about address changes at least four weeks prior to the cover date of the next issue. Update your membership information in your My Adventure Cycling account to prevent an interruption in service.

How do I send you a phone, address, or email update or simply a suggestion?

To update your personal information in our system, log into your My Adventure Cycling account. You can also email us at: memberships@adventurecycling.com. To give us feedback, send a suggestion.

Can I join if I live outside the U.S.?

Yes. We have more than 1,200 members residing overseas or in Canada and Mexico. The rates for these memberships have been adjusted to account for higher mailing costs. Join now.

How do I cancel my membership?

To cancel your membership, please contact us at memberships@adventurecycling.com and request a cancellation. Membership dues are refundable based on staff discretion.
